Intel- Nokia deal

Reports of collaboration between Intel and Nokia have been confirmed by the official announcement of the strategic partnership at a press conference. There will not be any Intel-based Nokia MID or netbook, as expected. But the partnership aims at developing new revolutionary mobile architecture deeply integrated with Nokia HSPA/3G technology. The pairing also collaborates their Moblin and Maemo Linux platforms with common technical specifications and cross-OS platform.

Intel has already developed WiMAX and WiFi wireless system for Nokia. Now, Intel inks another deal with licensing of Nokia HSPA modems. Intel confirmed that their Centrino brand will now be related specifically to the wireless connectivity solutions. N900 Rover Internet Tablet was also announced at the press conference. The huge investments by both the companies in their respective OS-related researches have been fruitful. The collaboration may be proved dangerous to the dominance of Windows XP in ultra-portable devices market.

Intel’s licensable modem technology is a reliable and trusted connectivity solution. Using Intel licensed modems, Nokia’s chipset strategy to create multiple chipsets can be kickstarted.

Intel will supply Nokia with their advanced mobile processors, as a part of the deal. This could boast Nokia’s plans of getting into the portable device market such as netbooks. It is rumoured that Nokia are looking forward to using Intel’s Moorestown platform, when it releases in 2010 or the Medfield smartphone platform expected to release in 2011. The experts seem to be pretty positive about the benefits of the deal to both the companies, but many doubt if Nokia will ever come up with an Intel-based mobile.
